The Secret Sauce to Allyship |
On November 18th, the Campbell Hall Allyship Group welcomed Kirsten Caplan '89, an alum and former secondary teacher, to present the "Secret Sauce to Allyship," which highlighted the importance of deep listening, self-reflection, and moving beyond binary thinking. These principles encouraged a commitment to shared growth and understanding, vital for cultivating an inclusive environment.
The session introduced SEED principles to guide the community's engagement. These included the "Scholarship of the Shelf and Self," emphasizing mutual learning, and "Windows and Mirrors," which illustrated the value of seeing both external perspectives and personal reflections. The "Politics of Location" principle urged participants to navigate privileges with mindfulness, recognizing the unique mix of advantages and oppressions individuals bring to the table.
Through creative exercises like the "We Are All Different Paper Bag Art Activity," participants explored visible and hidden aspects of identity, fostering connections. This hands-on approach, paired with multimedia inspirations like the painting We Are All Pearls by Whitney de Aranjo, symbolized the richness of shared experiences and the transformative potential of allyship in action.
We look forward to more engagements with Kirsten and the Allyship Group as we continue to exchange our collective experiences within the greater Campbell Hall Community.
